I haven't recorded anything for a couple weeks, and decided to run "Autumn Leaves" as my next project (I'm having fun covering some of my favorite standards while my muse rests up for the next original effort).

Before I get too deep into my own version, I thought I'd see if anyone wanted some of this, since the changes are pretty straightforward and this is another jazz-type tune that lends itself pretty well to a blues scale.

The idea is to do a rubato intro in ballad style, then kick into a nice little swing groove for the body of the piece. I've done the intro with piano here, but it could certainly be done on guitar, or sax and guitar, or sax and piano, (or vocals and piano, if anyone wants to move the concept from an instrumental to a vocal feature), or harmonica and guitar, or whatever. The dominant instrument is organ in the concept piece (attached) but again, could be anything... I'd be happy just comping chords for someone else to solo over and maybe taking a ride myself.

Any takers? It ain't blues (so sue me), but it's a nice chart to play and solo over.

(The AØ chord below can be played as a Cm/A. The Bb(11) can be nicely voiced as Ab/Bb.)

Very nice tune Chuck!

Thanks, Kevin... I couldn't leave it half-finished, just uploaded a new track. Not bad for an evening's work, I guess.

Kevin (and anyone else interested), here's a cut with the piano intro, then just drums and bass through the end. Set your project tempo to 160bpm, 4/4 time, and load this at 00:00:00, your click should line up fine.

And here's a cut with the piano and organ comps in place.

Sure! I'll give it a shot. I'm a bass player (electric and upright). Be patient, Thanksgiving coming up so it may be 2-3 weeks before I can get anything together. I've played this tune many times in different styles.

What software are you using?
Gordon, that's great! No sweat on the time frame, I'll leave my bass track in place until you can cut something. I'm using Cubase LE, but I don't think it really much matters what software you use. If you're using a sequencing/audio application, set your tempo to 160bpm and the time signature to 4/4, and import the MP3 at 00:00:00... it should line up fine. You could even use something like Audacity as long as your track begins at 00:00:00 of the MP3, just be sure that whatever you use, you record your part onto a separate track so you can shoot us back an MP3 of just the bass line that we can load into the master project.

I've attached an MP3 of the concept piece, sans bass track. Since we already have three people on board, I guess the arrangment is pretty much set, so the attached track should be good.

Aw crud, the first no-bass MP3 I posted, titled "Autumn Leaves - no bass.mp3", was the wrong length - if you've already downloaded it, don't use it. I'll be posing a corrected version in a moment, it'll be titled "Autumn Leaves - no bass2.mp3."

Sorry about that.

Here's the corrected MP3 - this one's the correct length.

Thanks, Hookman - I think I'm pleased with how it's come out so far... now if I can just get someone to take some of those tracks off my hands.......

Okay, as of Monday afternoon, the guitar tracks (thanks Kevin Holliman and Jay Mitchell) are spoken for, as is the bass track (Thanks Gordon M.).

The opening and closing themes are still open... might be nice for sax, harp, vocals, or we're certainly open for suggestions.
