I haven't recorded anything for a couple weeks, and decided to run "Autumn Leaves" as my next project (I'm having fun covering some of my favorite standards while my muse rests up for the next original effort).

Before I get too deep into my own version, I thought I'd see if anyone wanted some of this, since the changes are pretty straightforward and this is another jazz-type tune that lends itself pretty well to a blues scale.

The idea is to do a rubato intro in ballad style, then kick into a nice little swing groove for the body of the piece. I've done the intro with piano here, but it could certainly be done on guitar, or sax and guitar, or sax and piano, (or vocals and piano, if anyone wants to move the concept from an instrumental to a vocal feature), or harmonica and guitar, or whatever. The dominant instrument is organ in the concept piece (attached) but again, could be anything... I'd be happy just comping chords for someone else to solo over and maybe taking a ride myself.

Any takers? It ain't blues (so sue me), but it's a nice chart to play and solo over.

(The AØ chord below can be played as a Cm/A. The Bb(11) can be nicely voiced as Ab/Bb.)

My pleasure Gordon, your "nicest possible way" comment was more than enough to make up for any inconvenience - I LOL'd.

I guess you're now hearing the tracks as I heard them and can see why I felt the need to realign so many notes, especially on the P-bass track. It's not unusual to have to nudge these tracks bit to get them to line up after importing, and the best reference I had for the bass track was the first couple measues of the 2-beat patterns under the first theme. The alignment seemed to hold nicely through the end of the track, but the beginning was a bit hinky.

I may not get back to this for a day or three - I've spent so much time messing with music this week that I'm falling a little behind in my work and need to catch up.

Thanks again for all your work on this.

And by the way...Thanks for doing the assembly work, Chuck. I know it's eating up some time and all I've done is whine. I sound like a guitar player (I mean that in the nicest possible way :)
Okay, here's the latest.

Ok, listening to the Excerpt and the Original Bass tracks, I think we're really solid. I'd suggest the following little tweaks:

1. Do the EQ thing to my guitar track.

2. Tweak the stereo panning. Bass, drums and solo instruments panned center. Rhythm piano panned a bit left and rhythm guitar panned a bit right. Tweak the levels accordingly after listening again.

3. Fix the ending. Bass part does not fade.

That should do it. I'll keep working on my comping technique. I think if I played more up on the neck and muted the high strings, it would have more mids naturally and less highs. Ship it. ;)

It's got a few rough spots in it, but dang. I'm very proud to be a part of this recording. Your piano playing is first rate on this recording. Amazing.
