Roadhouse members,

It would help me a great deal if you could suggest the songs that you consider to be the standards of the Texas Blues sub-genre of blues. Obviously there will be a lot of opinion on this subject. So please be respectful. We'll listen to everyone's suggestions and then try to boil the list down to a reasonable number.

I'd like this list to contain both new and old standards. So obviously Stevie Ray Vaughan is fair game. Likewise, so are all the old legends of Texas Blues.

Also, if you can find a video of a classic performance of that song, that would help as well so that we can add those to our video library for future reference.

Thanks,

Michael

Yeah man, that's what I'm talking about. That will make the list for sure. Thanks Pat.

I just added the video here: Walk Right In

And I tagged it with the tag "Texas Blues Standard" (use quotes to get all the words together in one tag). If anyone else adds a video, tag it the same way. Then we can just click the tag and see all the submissions.

I've got a lot that I want to suggest. I'll post some throughout the day and this weekend.

Something from Lightnin Hopkins ought to be in there. Maybe "Cotton":

The audio is not timed w/ the video but here's a classic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20Feq_Nt3nM

Big Joe!
As much as I love Big Joe Turner (and you know I do), he's a KC boy.

Ok, so I've added a TON of new videos. And I'm going to continue adding them. But at this point, you can see the candidates I've added to the list here:

If there's one that you think shouldn't be on the list, just add a comment. And if there are ones I've missed, either add them yourself and tag them with "Texas Blues Standard", or just tell me and I'll add them.

One thing I've noticed as I'm doing this is that there are a lot of great songs out there by the early innovators that are really cool that many people haven't heard before. But the challenging part is ... are they standards? And, what I've been doing is if I've heard some of the local guys covering the tune, I make it a standard. If however, I just think the tune is a really cool piece of history that *should* be a standard, I make it a "Texas Blues Classic". It's debatable whether or not that's the best approach. But I welcome your input on all of this.

Keep checking back. More good stuff to come.

Great tunes. But Elmore was a Mississippi blues man.

Hmmmm - I'm confused. There are a bunch of Jimmy Reed tunes on here but he's a Mississippi boy too.
Good point.
