Where is the blues in Austin?? 8 Replies

BUDDY GUY at Austin City Limits SEPT 3rd  $20-$40

http://www.acl-live.com/calendar/2011/9/buddy-guy

Any discussion of Buddy Guy invariably involves a recitation of his colossal musical resume and hard-earned accolades. He’s a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a chief guitar influence to rock titans like Hendrix, Clapton, Beck, and Vaughan, a pioneer of Chicago’s fabled West Side sound, and a living link to that city’s halcyon days of electric blues. Buddy has received 23 W.C. Handy Blues Awards (the most any artist has received), the Billboard Magazine Century Award for distinguished artistic achievement, and the Presidential National Medal of Arts. At the age of 72, he appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone for the first time, as part of the magazine’s “100 Greatest Guitar Songs” package (his cataclysmic 1961 recording of “Stone Crazy” made the list).

Yet despite this long list of achievements, Buddy Guy and his music remain as vital as ever. Just this year, Buddy won his sixth Grammy at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards! His most current release, Living Proof, won the Grammy for Contemporary Blues Album.

Buddy Guy is bringing his legendary talents to Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater on Saturday, September 3rd. Mark it on your calendars, because you will not want to miss this Blues icon playing songs from a career that spans decades!

Digital music symposium at City Hall

Future music speakers to be invited to Austin

KXAN (Aug 29)
Computers and music will be the focus of a symposium set for Thursday, Sept. 8 at City Hall Council Chambers, 301 W. 2nd Street .
The event will feature David Kusek, international digital music keynote speaker and one of the first to capitalize on the commercial potential of computers and music, according to city spokesman Kevin Johns, director of the Economic Growth and Redevelopment Services.
Kusek is a co-developer of the MIDI system -- musical instrument digital interface -- well known in the world of creating digital music. In 1993, Kusek, with A&M Records, designed and developed the first commercially available enhanced compact disc that connected audio CDs to a personal computer.
Participants can expect to learn the issues important to the future of music and uncover its opportunities and challenges. The symposium hopes to inspire artists and music business owners to take advantage of this next platform. The event is free, open to the public and will include a Q&A session. It begins at 7 p.m.
“This is a great opportunity for the music community to hear first hand from a world renowned digital music expert how Austin ’s talent can better compete in the digital economy,” said Mayor Lee Leffingwell.
“This will be the first in a series of guest speakers we'll invite to share their professional perspective with the Austin music community,” said Don Pitts, manager of the city's Music Division. “Each of these speakers will bring a specific area of expertise to the table that will provide solutions and inspiration to our local music community."
Kusek is the vice president of Berklee Media , CEO of Berkleemusic, a digital music pioneer, author and entrepreneur. Kusek will speak on behalf of his 2005 best selling music business book, " The Future of Music: Manifesto for the Digital Music Revolution ." Kusek has been featured in Forbes, The New York Times, MTV, CNBC, Billboard, Wired, The Boston Globe, The Christian Science Monitor, Associated Press and The Financial Times. He is also a frequent speaker on NPR, NBC-TV, and the BBC among several others.
For more information, contact Pitts at 512-974-7821.

I saw this post about a local bar, owned by a blues bass player, Jax, who sold it....since it is located near UT fraternity row I fear, blues will go on down the road..here is his post:

On August 8th, JAX was sold to an investors group who will turn the place into a UT Sports Bar by the end of the month.

All music booked in August will go on!

I want to sincerely and personally thank each and every band, music fan, reprebate and drunk that made JAX the most incredible adventure I've had yet.

I plan to take a few months off and then seek out a bigger and better "venue with a menu".

Why? Because it's still not weird enough for me!

With Much Love!

Jack
