I've always loved the blues and always will. To me, it is the purest musical form of expression and melody. I started performing music as an elementary school student and by high school I received my first guitar... a Fender Strat w/ a black body, rosewood board and white pickguard. The seed was planted.
After a few years of constant woodshedding, at 18 I had made my way into the local jams and even scored a few gigs playing with some of the locals including the late greats U.P. Wilson and Robert Ealey. Of course, at the time I had no idea who they were or how they'd impact my musical career. All I knew is that what I was doing was pure... the real deal. I followed them around every chance I had with guitar and amp in tow. Had it not been for that, I would have never met and fallen under the wing of Detroit bluesman Larry McCray... and if it wasn't for Larry, I wouldn't be who I am today.
By my 20th birthday, a lotta luck and a handful of talent found me in Memphis, TN sharing a 9-bedroom home w/ McCray and the Motown-esqe group The Hardway Connection. My education was in full swing. Larry let me tag along to experience the recording of a coupla projects he was working on. In that 9 month period I learned how to play, what "phrazing" really is and that less is ALWAYS more. I also had the opportunity to make my way in and out of the Beale St. area clubs. It was there that I would learn it takes much more than playing well to sound good. Shortly after I returned to Ft. Worth, I performed with a number of acts but ultimately landed a gig with the Dallas based band Shame Shame until 2000.
The rest is more of the same... countless nights spent hunting the dream and experiencing as much as possible onstage and off. In more recent years I have branched out to perform with a few Texas Country artist's including Casey Donahew and singer/songwriter Scott Copeland; however, nothing has my attention more than my current group,
DIRTY POOL.
